While you won’t be guaranteed a seat on the regular trains, they present an excellent option, especially if you’re purchasing the Odakyu Hakone Pass.

With the Hakone Free Pass, there is no need to stress about acquiring an extra Ltd. Express ticket or shelling out additional fees.

The catch with regular trains lies in their complexities, especially if you’re unaware of Tokyo’s commuter rail system.

The Odakyu line branches several times, so boarding a train headed towards Hakone-Yumoto or Odawara is crucial.

For a swift and direct journey lasting 90–100 minutes, aim for the special express (tokkyū) trains.

These limited-stop trains operate hourly to thrice-hourly, based on factors like weekdays or weekends, morning or afternoon travel, and sometimes, the direction of your journey.

Should special express trains be unavailable, opt for any express train bound for Odawara.

We strongly advise against experimenting with other trains unless you’re well-versed with the Odakyu lines.

At Odawara, you can transfer to a local train headed to Hakone-Yumoto.

However, this transfer adds approximately 30 minutes to your overall journey.

Reaching the station is a breeze, especially considering the central location of Shinjuku station.

Use Tokyo’s robust public transportation network, including options like the Tokyo Metro or JR Lines, to easily access Shinjuku.

3. Using the Tokyo to Hakone JR Pass (or Bullet Train Tokyo To Hakone)

If you already have the Japan Railway pass, consider taking a JR train from Tokyo or Shinagawa station to Odawara station.

Another option is to take the Hikari or Kodama bullet train to Odawara Station, which takes 30-40 minutes.

Upon reaching Odawara, you can continue to Hakone-Yumoto station.

Here’s the hack: get your Hakone Free Pass at Odawara station, priced lower at 47 SGD than the 57 SGD at Shinjuku station.

The cost difference results from excluding the Shinjuku to Odawara leg, covered by your JR Pass.

However, travelling on local trains means no guaranteed seat, and you’ll need to navigate a transfer in Odawara.

If your preference is a direct journey from Shinjuku on the Romancecar, it’s advisable to secure the Hakone Free Pass from Shinjuku and then add extra money for the enhanced experience.

4. Taking the Odakyu Hakone Highway Bus

Experience hassle-free travel between Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station and the enchanting Lake Ashi area in Hakone with direct highway buses.

These convenient buses operate every 30 minutes, making stops at key locations, including Togendai and the Hakone Prince Hotel.

For those arriving at Haneda Airport, the company offers less frequent yet convenient direct buses to Hakone, stopping at Yokohama Station along the route.

The one-way journey, priced at about 28.40 SGD, provides a comfortable ride, taking approximately 2.5 hours under optimal traffic conditions.

Brace yourself for a unique experience aboard the local train, navigating the slow and steep terrains, creating an illusion of traversing back and forth between destinations.

From Gora Station, continue your adventure with a cable car journey to Sounzan. The cable car ride offers panoramic views, setting the stage for the next part of your exploration.

You can then take the Hakone Ropeway, a gondola-like transport, which will take you to Togendai Station, the gateway to the mesmerising Lake Ashinoko.
